Halloween or All Hollow’s Eve is celebrated on the night of
31st October. The night is celebrated in a traditional way by doing
some activities like bonfire, trick or treat, costume parties, visiting haunted
houses and carving jack-o-lanterns. It’s the oldest holiday which is widely
celebrated and enjoyed by all. While millions of people celebrate this holiday
without knowing the myth, history and facts about Halloween which makes it more
fascinating and mystical.
Some people encounters it as a holiday for fun, by putting
on different costumes, making horror stuff, playing trick or treats, enjoying
theme parties. While some others see it as time of ghosts, goblins,
superstitions and evil spirits which should be avoided.
Halloween is celebrated on 31st October which is
dated as the last day of Celtic calendar which was celebrated on honoring dead.
The holiday is being celebrated as long as 2000 years ago. All Hallows Eve is
an evening that was created by Christians that use to convert pagans and it is
celebrated on 1st November.
Various cultures celebrate it differently but the overall
practice remains same. There are many versions of the origin and custom of Halloween
but the practices remains same.
Halloween is frequently celebrated with bonfires which
involves big fires lighted on the night to summon evil spirits. Some people
think that it is an important ritual to be performed at that night. It is also
believed that the fire attracts insects to the area which attracts bats and
that’s how the whole situation becomes dramatic.
Celts also believed that the souls and spirits roamed the
streets and villages at night. As not all souls are friendly, to pacify the
evil some gifts and treats were left out so to ensure next year’s crop would be
plentiful and that’s how the custom of trick or treat evolved.
With the passage of time there is quite a lot of evolution
in the celebration attire of the event. Now it is celebrated with special zest
as it had once was. Merchandizers encourage people by displaying special
discounts on items for Halloween like costumes, accessories, customized
jack-o-lanterns, decoration items, candies mimicking eyes, blood or worms etc. It
has become second most celebrated event after Christmas. Also the film industry
has upgraded it by making movies on the topic of Halloween making it more
spooky and fascinating for youth. So all in all it has become more of a source
of business for a lot of people.
However, the event is celebrated by the children and adults
equally. It’s like a blissful event before Christmas.
